How My Journey Began
Heather’s work grew from her own family’s story. When her teenage son came out, she was filled with love, fear, and the realization that she still had so much to unlearn about identity, belonging, and what it truly means to love someone as they are. The process was messy and humbling. It changed how she listens, parents, leads, and moves through the world. Over time, it revealed her life’s work: helping others navigate their own unlearning with more grace, clarity, and courage.

Today, Heather supports parents, educators, and organizations who want to move through discomfort toward understanding. She teaches what she calls confident kindness, the ability to stay grounded and compassionate even when the conversation feels hard. Her approach is simple and deeply human: listen more, judge less, and make room for repair. She believes that connection begins with honesty and that growth is always possible when we choose to begin again.
In addition to speaking and coaching, Heather is a longtime freelance editor who helps writers and students tell their stories with clarity and care. She also leads The More Human. More Kind. Journaling Hour and shares essays, prompts, and private podcasts on her More Human. More Kind. Substack.

A few things that makes Heather...
Heather.
Heather is a quiet-morning person who treasures her first cup of coffee before the house wakes up. She walks every day with her dog, Mackenzie, and finds grounding in yoga, meditation, and moments of stillness. Indie bookstores, cozy coffee shops, and getting lost in a good historical novel are her favorite reset buttons.
She is a passionate Michigan football fan, a loyal lover of lip balm and skincare, and a dedicated maker of her famous gumbo. She loves the ocean, crisp mountain air, live music, and singing in her car. Her kids will tell you her laugh is their favorite thing about her. She’ll tell you hugs are her love language, offered with warmth and respect.
Heather lives in the Chicago area with her husband and their four wonderful children, who remind her every day that becoming more human and more kind is a lifelong practice.
